"People grow through experience if they meet life honestly and courageously. This is how character is built."
---Eleanor Roosevelt
Tonight I delivered a meal to a friend who recently had surgery. Nothing gourmet or fancy, but hopefully edible and maybe even tasty. This friend has had more than one surgery as she has battled cancer, but always has a smile on her face when I have come by with a meal. She dresses well, looks great, and talks about a range of topics unrelated to her health. I am so impressed and inspired by her attitude and courage.

I feel exactly as you do when I visit a friend who is similarly stricken with cancer, and has undergone several surgeries, starting when her youngest child was in 5th grade. So uplifting to discuss/dish on the latest topic, just as we did before her diagnosis. I take her our favorite tres leches cake from a bakery we discovered together when our children swam together in high school (they're now in college). We decided we'd rather have starbucks and cake than the chipolte the swimmers were having -- i wish we were 5 years younger and knew nothing about cancer.
ReplyDeleteHer children have all chosen to attend college close to home -- they are truly a tribute to their mother. She was so generous with her time the first year i knew her, when i had a 18 mo old, in terms of carpooling more than her share so my preschooler wouldn't endure extra trips -- i hope to give her as much of my time as her schedule allows. I want to believe in the power of prayer, as i find myself praying for her, even though i am not a religious person.
